Motel Row
Fourth Street North -- the portion
between downtown St. Petersburg and
Gandy Bridge -- is a land of fast food
joints and gas stations that share
space with landmarks of the past.
At night, the aging motel neon signs
are woven into a tapestry with today's
McDonald's, Checkers and Subways.
Modern establishments and motels
share some of the commonalitites of
attracting business, except the small
street-side motel is a dying icon of
America's former travel industry.
Today's traveling family is more apt
to vacation in chain hotels, leaving
mom and pop motels as a place for
the seemier side of today's transient.
