CHILD'S ARMOR

MOSCOW, KREMLIN ARMORY, about 1634
Master Petr Shasat (?)
Iron, brass, leather

This child's armor probably was made for the Czarevich Alexei (later Czar Alexei Mikhailovich ), son of Mikhail Feodorovich. Like adult armor, it consists of a helmet, cuirass, and a pair each of vambraces, cuisses with poleyns, sabatons and gauntlets (one of which is damaged).

Its decoration is characteristic of the time, with cast laps of brass and a figured ornament in relief. This expensive toy was kept in the Armory for a long time. It may also have been used by the children of Czar Alexei Mikhailovich, including the future Emperor Peter the Great.
