Day One
To Serve & Collect
In four Tampa Bay cities, generous disability pension plans encourage some police officers and firefighters to retire from their jobs.
Lobbyist knows pensions firsthand
A man who lobbies legislators to increase benefits for police and firefighters collects disability himself.
Smooth sailing for pensioner
Two years ago, Largo Police officer David Paulsen skippered a crew in a race against the elements from Clearwater to Key West. He was in his second year of light duty and only a few months shy of applying for a lifetime disability pension.
"I feel like I can do the job"
After William Hamner was injured, Tampa didn't want him. Now, he gets a pension and works as a cop in Alabama.
"I followed the letter of their law"
Some call it "The house that the city built." A former Tampa police officer, who retired on a disability pension, calls it home.
