A single weather-worn, neglected lighthouse off the coast of Tarpon Springs sparked my interest in Florida's beacons in 1993. From the tattered shell of the Anclote Key Lighthouse to the pristine, barber pole stripes of St. Augustine, to the azure seas surrounding the reef lighthouses, the state's 30 sentinels have been witness and participant in Florida's marine history.
Many stand today as great engineering accomplishments of a bygone era. They have withstood the ravages of hurricanes and destructive erosion. Indian attacks and Civil War strategies have darkened their lights. And today, neglect and vandalism continue to be their enemies. Florida's lights still represent hope and home to the mariners of the state's waters and indeed entire communities.
