ring A new piece of history

A small silver ring, probably a gift for a special occasion, is a poignant reminder of the boxcar's human cargo. The girl's ring was found last year by John Anton Maseman, director and chief conservator for the South Florida Conservation Center. He was cleaning the freight car as part of his effort to conserve the almost 80-year-old car.

Little is known of the tiny ring with a missing stone, said Holocaust Center director Steve Goldman.

"All we know is that it was found in the boxcar," he said, adding that the Holocaust was the only era during which boxcars were used to transport humans.
