About the author
Born in 1948, Roy Peter Clark is senior scholar at Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he has taught writing since 1979. He came to Poynter after working as a writing coach at the St. Petersburg Times. Since 1980, Clark also has taught writing to children and their teachers.
From 1994 to 1996, he spent hundreds of hours interviewing the story's characters, traveling from small town-Michigan to Rio de Janeiro. It was Clark's wife, Karen, who introduced him to Jane Morse in the fall of 1992. Karen Clark and Jane Morse are both soccer moms, and that is how they met.
